"Come back. Even as a shadow. Even as a dream.”
-Euripides
To let a loved one go ought to be one of the most heart-wrenching feats we all have to face as humans. Whether through a love lost or death, we are left feeling like a part of our existence was amputated, and we spend months, years trying to fill the hole that the person has left behind. Madeline Miller, in the song of Achilles, says that “When he died, all things soft and beautiful and bright would be buried with him.” And often that feeling never truly goes away. Often one does not even want it to go away. Because forgetting and moving on can seem like a crime.
And the summit of our struggle then lies in the expression of that very struggle. How can we possibly express to anyone the pain we feel, the abandon and darkness that surrounds us. And above all: how do we communicate with the lost, to tell them how badly we want them to come back. Even as a shadow. Even as a dream...
